And a whisper, a whisper about The Potters
Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone (1997) opens on a perfectly normal' scene. Everything At number four, Privet Drive, is orderly, In its place, commonplace, fine. And yet, within three paragraphs, The first secret of The novel is revealed: Mrs Dursley has a sister that must be concealed. At all costs. The Potters are not (to be) spoken about. This is The first of many secrets, The first example of unspoken truths so unbearable they are unspeakable, And The first that forces its way out of hiding, no matter how much effort has been put into repressing, circumventing, or rather circumlocuting it.
In The Harry Potter series, concealing a truth, an identity, or an event involves literal as well as verbal And psychological forms of displacement (see Mr Dursley's attempts At evading Harry's first letter from Hogwarts), And when The unspeakable or The unspoken escapes concealment, it manifests itself In transformative disruption And loss of control.
This conference paper explores The various forms And shapes these circumlocutions take, The disruptions they cause, And their purpose And function In The narrative.
