Storytelling is an intrinsic part of human society. All cultures had their own beliefs, and whether values were shared by religious narratives or folktales, we developed our outlook through storytelling and narrative. Everybody is familiar with oral history, literature, theatre and film as a media for storytelling, but what about computer games?
While a huge amount of the genre remains undeveloped regarding stories - why do you need a story when button mashing in tetris?! - more and more we are seeing not just finely crafted dramatic works in big budget computer game releases, but also the evolution of a media that puts the player in control of key plot points and moral choices. This is a new development in storytelling which allows us to shape the narrative as we see fit. Whether we are playing for the simple thrill of discovering what lies around the next corner, or just to explore a new world, computer games now have the power to make us emotionally invested in our gameplay characters and their relationships.
For this event we will be exploring storytelling in computer games, with reference to the following games:
The Last of Us - dramatic narrative
Bioshock - imaginative plot creation
Soma - philosophy of being
Alien Isolation - world building
Senua's Sacrifice - mental health as gameplay subject matter
It is not necessary to have played any of the above games, but to be able to contribute in the discussion, please at least review the game plots online and/or look online for key videos of plot points. Beware of spoilers if you still intend to play any of those games.
You are also very welcome to come along to discuss your own favourite games, and why the story or character means so much to you!
