Round table to discuss the overproduction of milk and its harmful consequences for European and western breeders
African
The dairy crisis in Europe is linked to a situation of overproduction financed by subsidies from the common agricultural policy. However, this phenomenon, which has continued since 2015, has worsened with the Covid-19 crisis, which plunges European dairy farmers into a new crisis. Due to the confinement, Farmers could not sell their milk supply and the price per liter collapsed again. In response to this crisis, the European Commission repeats the same mistakes and finances a storage of surplus milk, especially in the form of powdered milk. 90,000 tonnes of milk powder are now at risk of being exported at low prices to Africa, to the detriment of breeders from here and elsewhere. What avenues to resolve these market imbalances? Do cooperative initiatives for a fair price paid to dairy producers offer large-scale prospects?
