Visit The showcase on the 1st floor of La Maison du Nombre: An overview of the geological history of Luxembourg and the evolution of our planet has been given for a few days in a small exhibition put together by Natascha Kuhlmann, post-doctoral researcher formerly in Geophysics Group of the University of Luxembourg. Particular attention is paid to the economic minerals and rocks of the country, for example the iron ore Minette, which made Luxembourg prosperous. Find out more about: Esch: 175 million years ago, terrestrial period Toarcium (Jurassic): fossil bed in the posidonia bituminous shales (ammonites, molluscs, brachiopods) How different from today! Animals and plants lived in a shallow sea, with no oxygen in the deeper waters and with a very high oil content in the oil shale. Many discoveries have been made directly under the University campus in Belval: ammonites, small brachiopods, molluscs, crinoids, fish and saurians. Also on display are the most important minerals and some rocks from Luxembourg. Since geologists practically work in the field, some tools are also on display. The organizer, who is a geologist, will give a short introduction in December.
