Addiction dependence: how to create new disorders with old receipts? the case of gaming disorder

Addiction and dependence are major challenges for psychological research and treatment. Embedded in the new Research Priority "Health" of the University of Luxembourg, experts in public lectures will report on the state of scientific research and therapeutic practice, making various forms of dependencies, Their diagnosis and treatment are presented and discussed, so that the series of lectures takes up highly topical and socially relevant health issues.

Following a contribution, a reception will take place.

About the conference: Following the inclusion of gaming and gambling disorders in the ICD-11, there is an urgent need to clarify what constitutional addiction to avoid pathologizing normal behavior. In the past years, an increasing body of research has been engaged in a wide range of common behavioral and leisure activities as a candidate for behavioral addiction, resulting in pathologizing non-clinically relevant behaviors. By a confirmatory bias (eg, a priori conceptualization of excessive appetitive behaviors as addictive disorders). The current talk thus has a negative impact on the recognition of gaming disorder as a legitimate mental condition, despite a convincing research base and a public health need.
