Located in the heart of Europe, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was immediately a key player in European unification. From 1952, its capital became the first place of work for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) which emerged after the Declaration made on May 9, 1950 by Robert Schuman, Minister for Foreign Affairs of France (who was born on June 29, 1886 in Clausen, of a Luxembourg mother and a Lorraine father). The ECSC establishes its institutions in Luxembourg. Thus, its executive body - the High Authority - chaired by Jean Monnet, is established in an emblematic building of the city, which currently houses the State Bank and Savings Bank (BCEE); the Council of Ministers meets regularly in the great hall of the town hall; the Court of Justice of the ECSC inaugurates its work Cercle municipal (today, Cercle Cité) located at Place d'Armes and places its offices at Villa Vauban, near the municipal park.

After the merger of the executives of the ECSC, the EEC and Euratom on 8 April 1965, Luxembourg shared, with Strasbourg and Brussels, the workplace status of the Community institutions, before becoming, in 1992, a of the three "permanent capitals" of the European Union. The city of Luxembourg is defined as "center of community institutions with legal and financial vocation, present and future".

If, since its creation the Court of Justice of the ECSC, then of the European Communities and finally of the EU (CJEU) is based in Luxembourg, it was only at the dawn of the 1990s that it took up residence on the plateau de Kirchberg, in his new Palace, designed by the French architect Dominique Perrault. This Palace, which has constantly evolved through aesthetic and technical choices of great originality, has nowadays become a living work of art, a symbol of the EU, and a flagship of Luxembourg urban planning.

To discover the history of this constantly renewed architectural work and the art collections it houses, the Europe Direct Information Center (EDIC) of the University of Luxembourg invites you to the webinar "The Palace of the Court of Justice of the European Union - images of an identity in the making ”with Sara Afonso Ferreira, Art historian, Protocol and Visits Directorate of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
